What happened to it all being universal? Like the windows 10 app would work if you had a tablet, desktop or phone Or did I completely misinterpret the entire advertising campaign of windows? There’s a number of things that factor in. Easy to handle on PC, but you gotta remember to handle the phone’s physical “back” button correctly. No, the universal Netflix app is in Windows 8, which does use the universal app system.

The Windows 10 one is not universal yet. Universal apps came in with W8, not W You are ‘remembering’ marketing rehash. Actually, no. MS did call windows 8. If you install visual studio, you’d see that windows 8. IINM, with windows 8. There are still phone events that need to be coded differently from PC. Of course 8. UWP is definitely not just rebranded Windows 8. There’s numerous differences. It’s definitely a similar idea and what they were heading towards with 8.

When I said the “universal thing is the exact same” i meant the idea and philosophy, not the actual coding. Reading back I see what you were saying, the idea is the same I always felt when working with 8. There were numerous things you could do in a WP8 Silverlight app that wasn’t possible in an 8. Windows 10 UWP Platform looks like it is getting better with each build so that’s great to see.

Looking forward to building more apps on the platform. I agree. From playing around with a Windows 10 UWP project, it does feel better and easier to do a bunch of things. So clearly not the exact same, because everything about UWP is about the coding.

As for phone events like the back button, you just need to include the Mobile Extensions library in the project. As a guy who has 8. However, the idea and philosophy are exactly the same, just rebranded with a heavier push. It’s not the same as 8. In 10 you can create a project in visual studio With 8, those were separate projects even if they shared code and were ‘universal’. That’s wierd of you to say, I could deploy my projects to both phone and desktop from one 8.

You misinterpreted. Being universal isn’t a byword for on all the things at once. Not in language, no, but in their advertising campaign, yes. Isn’t magic. You still need to code the phone part. That’s the problem. It should all work with the push of a button at the time of submission. All these companies always use the excuse of not having resources for Windows Mobile. Even if the work is minimal, why add more work when you already developed a PC app?

I wish it was that easy. Should and can have completely different meanings and reality. The question i always get when i talk to devs is , “then how is it universal code base if i still have to specifically code for mobile? Isn’t the app that is Universal. It’s the platform. Then the devs you’re talking to must have no idea what they are doing. Otherwise they would understand. Its a platform question not one about programming. MS misrepresents this all the time. So if you are not programming for other platforms that is a very valid question.

Lol, that’s the question I was gonna ask! MS did a demo at one their events where the guy was creating a UWA. He made seem like 1 click of a button to make the mobile app. They do. The only time they go in depth is during Build. Almost every other time they make it seem like you don’t have to do much if anything at all.

Some apps it is that simple. I was doing some work on an internal encrypted messaging app and can deploy a working build to phones with no code changes. With more work on xaml side, the UI now adapts better to the screen but I didn’t change any C code at all.

It depends on each individual app, some will need hardly any mobile specific changes, others will need more. It worked functionality without any UI changes but you want to perfect the experience in most cases. Maybe the devs you’re talking to have never had to do backend web code for different screen resolutions and browsers while maintaining one code base. It’s the exact same philosphy. Totally agree. You don’t specifically code for mobile, you specifically code for functionality.

For instance, if a device has a camera, or if a device has a physical back button. Ima go out on a limb and say those devs were alien spies who’ve never written a line of code. Any real dev wouldn’t have to ask the question. It’s just a question based on the language MS uses. Unless one is actually going to program for UWA platform. It is entirely valid to ask those questions. Mind you once you do deep research after one’s interest is peaked then you actually realize what that means.

But at first, yes when one first hears about this, whether you work as a dev or only program on the weekends, it is a valid question to have. It is scalable. It is adaptive. It is a single code base, even if they don’t release it at the same time. And it is in no way a valid question for anyone who’s developed anything and is halfway competent. It doesn’t take “deep research” to realize that hardware is different and will need little specifications written to work correctly.

I wanna show a button only when on desktop. I can release the app on desktop awhile because the button will always be there. But I will have to specify not to show it on mobile before I release the app for mobile. This is just basic programming. It’s not gonna magically know what you want.

I don’t think that’s possible, until we have the excatly same OS running on phone Windows10 desktop. And I don’t think thats coming soon. You’ve never programmed a thing Even in web the truly universal app platform you have to make special accommodations for small screens.

There’s no getting around it no matter how much you converge. Yet when you use continuum and the windows 10 mail app from the phone magics itself into the windows 10 desktop mail app Universal can mean it shares the same code bur could be seperate apps. It doesn’t have to be one app.

It is universal. I suppose they simply haven’t made a mobile UI for the app yet. It is great that they now have the PC code base for windows 10 within the UWP and esentially just need to figure out the UI on smaller physical screens like phones and maybe some code adjustments and they should be good to go.

Probably somewhere in January they should be done. You still have 2 apps that are linked together in the store. That is a separate binary for each platform. The platform needs to be targeted for it to function properly, as the Mobile version may have physical back buttons and other api’s that dont exist in the desktop version.

If you watch the series on Microsoft Virtual Academy, it describes how the store works, and how code sharing between the apps occurs. They are not the same exact application. When you develop a UWP, you have to target device families. One family is desktops, one family is mobile, etc. Microsoft actually demonstrated this at Build earlier this year. A desktop is different from mobile, obviously. The hardware is different, the screen sizes are different, the use cases are different. This should happen pretty quickly because the foundation has been laid.

Relax buddy, Netflix has always covered every platform and has never made universal apps! Do you really think that this article is not creating confsusion? If you wanted to say that the new app will substitute the old one for mobile soon then you should write that.

By what you wrote one would believe that there is no app on mobile. Actually it comes preinstalled on Lumia :D. It says the Windows 10 version is coming soon. Why is that misleading? For example “The streaming video app is still not available for Windows 10 Mobile smartphones” this would make you think there is no Netflix app on windows 10 mobile.

Oh well it actually only means that, if taken out of context. Agree it should more clearly state it, even though any WP user that’s now on Windows 10 Mobile should know it is available, there could be some people who take what it says at face value and think it’s an important app that’s missing.

It means that the current Windows 10 Mobile app is not available yet. Which is saying that the current app is still the Windows 8. In the near future Netflix will be releasing the Windows 10 mobile app for devices running Windows Yes, the current windows phone app is the 8. The Mobile version sorely needs and update. Especially for Windows 10!

My Continuum TV is waiting anxiously. So much for them updating their web player. Why not the walking dead ;P. I wasn’t sure if Netflix was going to update their app. That’s not good. Windows 10 Mobile is coming. Read the article. As it says in the article this is a UWP app. They just haven’t released the mobile version yet. My guess would be all the code to let it run on a phone is actually in the PC app, there are just things they’re fixing before they allow it to download on phones.

Yes, we need to keep educating on this, otherwise the comment section here will look like this for every new UWP app released on Desktop first – and that will be quite a few. One big reason why Netflix in particular would need to spend more time on the mobile version?

Not to mention the hardware and use cases are significantly different. You use the same core functionality of the application, but you tailor the UI and how you want people to use the application by device type, screen size, etc. This is what Netflix is doing. They started with desktops and tablets because that is a much larger user base than phones. The larger screens are also used more for viewing.

I’ve never watched an movie on my phone and rarely even a sitcom. Did you not even read the title? Nice blind and useless comment.

What happened with the “code once, release to everyone” mantra? It happened that MS gave developers freedom. They can realease to any platform with very little effort using the UWP framework but they can do it step by step instead of all at once. Freedom is a good thing. I’m a developer, I assure you that developing for every device has never been so easy and unified till today, this really is impressive.

Daniel Rubino needs to write a post and stick it to the front page of Windows Central. Clearly you don’t understand what is UWP at all. Is not the same app, just they share almost the same code so developers can develop faster. Not all apps are the same even on UI Look at Pandora for Windows 10 Mobile and Windows 10 , others can be almost equal, but depends on what the developer wants to do, and that means the day the both apps are published on the store can be different if they pass through the store check first.

There’s too many people ignoring what UWP is. Hope you are not one of those anymore m8. If it’s coming then why is it such a big issue? This was Microsofts plan.

Have them target the desktop and then they would eventually give in to making a mobile version, because why not. You are assuming that mobile is a big deal to developers, when its the desktop that has the market they want to target. I’d rather them design properly than give us a half-assed effort.

In the future, we could even see the mobile versions released first, like you say it depends on the market the developer is going for. There are some differences on mobile that have to be handled. It’s fine that desktop is released first and that doesn’t mean mobile isn’t happening.

Mobile will likely have a different UI, for example, on most universal apps. You don’t have a clue. Near future means TubeMate 3. Google Play. Windows Windows. Most Popular. New Releases.
